Press Report

And that's a wrap!

Following Whaley Bridge’s title win last week, it was down to the teams behind them to make up the rest of the top five. Poynton, Linotype, Denton, Altrincham and Knutsford were all in action as they aimed to make the top five. Poynton were guaranteed second place before the weekend began as they host Congleton Vale at Poynton Sports Club.

The Macclesfield side were 3-2 victors on the day, closing off a strong season with a win. The JB Parker Cup runners up won through goals from Rick Tindall and Andrew Hurst (2).

Linotype Cheadle finished the season with five consecutive losses, first against Poynton, then Denton, Knutsford, Poynton (again) and finally this weekend away at strugglers, Greenalls Padgate St Oswalds. The home side won 3-0 in Warrington to take all three points from a Nomads side who were sat in second place before their recent poor run of form.

Denton Town finish third after they beat Rylands by four goals to one at Whittles Park. Josh Walsh, Vinnie Braine and Tom Cleary got the goals for the Tameside locals to round off what has been a breakthrough season for Denton, in which they moved from lowly midtable to title challengers in two months.

Knutsford moved into fourth with a goalless draw away at Eagle Sports, they leapfrog Linotype Cheadle on goal difference.
Altrincham Reserves finish ahead of Wythenshawe Town for the first time in the Cheshire Football League after their 1-1 draw at Moss Lane with Crewe FC.

League One

The biggest news of the weekend saw Billinge win Division One on the final day of their season, defeating Mersey Valley at home. The visitors went ahead early on, but it was all Billinge after that as they won by four goals to one. Goals from Liam Platt (2), Ryan Sephton and Liam Bowden were decisive for the Lancashire natives as they took the league title out of the hands of Warrington.

West Didsbury and Chorlton Reserves defeated Lostock Gralam away from home by three goals to two in Northwich.
Middlewich defeated Halebank in a highly competitive affair winning 4-3 at Seddon Street. Braces from Sam O’Sullivan and Mike Whitehead won it for the Witches, who finish the season in eighth.

Pilkington moved ahead of AFC Macclesfield into third with a 4-2 victory over FC St Helens. Goals from Graham Boylan, Luke McCausland, Matt Taylor and Adam Dixon helped the side come back from two goals down – FC St Helens’ goals coming in the form of Paul Sweeney and Jordan Smith.
Relegated side, Tarporley Vics, finished the season with a win, defeating Golborne Sports by four goals to three.

League Two

Finally, Ford Motors defeated promoted side, Deva Christleton, by one goal to nil to move into fourth (ahead of Orford). Their goal came via Nevil Picton.

On a personal note, I’d like to thank you all for what has been a very exciting season of football in the Cheshire Football League. This will be the last Press Report of the season and, on behalf of the league, I hope you all have a wonderful summer and we’ll see you again next season – there are still some games remaining in the leagues, so make sure you keep an eye out.
